GSSARCHITECTURE

The spectacular curved roof is a highlight of Worle Community School's stunning £1.7 million restaurant. Designed by GSSARCHITECTURE, the 650m2 rectangular, steel-framed roof structure is supported at its four corners from where it arches gently up and over the cavernous dining hall. Its dynamic, vaulted design is echoed internally by a curved suspended ceiling to create a wonderfully light and airy restaurant.

Challenge
The key to the project's success is the roof's construction. Inside, the challenge was to ensure the roof complied with the strict acoustic requirements of Building Bulletin 93. Outside the task was to provide a cost effective insulation solution for the roof's curved surface - a task made all the more challenging because the presence of the kitchen meant the insulation had to be non-combustible.


The ROCKWOOL solution
ROCKWOOL's roofing consultants worked with GSSARCHITECTURE and the roofing contractor, Single Ply Services, from the outset to help develop the best, most cost effective insulation solution for this challenging application. The answer was ROCKWOOL DuoRock T/F 85.


Beyond Insulation
This superior dual-density board, with its high density, robust top surface met all the project requirements: it was flexible enough to accommodate roof's curve; it required fewer
insulation fasteners so it was economical and fast to install; and it offered excellent thermal and acoustic insulation for compliance with Part L and Part E of the Building Regulations.

The roof was waterproofed using the Sika-Trocal S single ply roofing membrane, with the ROCKWOOL DuoRock laid underneath to form a complete acoustic solution. ROCKWOOL even provided the design team with accurate calculations using BuildDesk U-value software and a rain-noise calculator to confirm compliance with the regulations.
